3. Utterson and Dr. Jekyll

Two weeks after Utterson's conversation with the butler in Jekyll's house, Dr. Jekyll

gives a dinner party to his old friends. He invites Mr. Utterson too. Utterson is happy

about this invitation. He can have a chance to warn Dr. Jekyll about Hyde. Jekyll has

Utterson enjoys the party. He stays in Jekyll's house longer than the others. He wants to

talk to him alone. When everyone leaves, Jekyll and Utterson sit by the fireplace. Poole

serves them some coffee. Dr. Jekyll is happy to be alone with Utterson because he likes

him very much. He also trusts him as a lawyer.

I want to speak with you about your will, Henry, says Utterson. Why? We don't need to

talk about it. It is finished. I never approve of it, Henry. You know that, says Utterson.

I know. You always tell me so. But you don't need to worry about it, my friend. I am in

no trouble at all. You must believe me, says Jekyll, in a very calm way. I am worried

because I know unpleasant things about your friend Hyde. Dr. Jekyll's face suddenly becomes

pale. He gets very tense when he hears the name Hyde. But when Utterson says Hyde is using

his money, he begins to laugh and says, I know. I want poor Hyde to use my money in the bank.

Then, he gets serious again. He wants to end this talk about the will. So he says, I really

don't want to talk about the will, Utterson. Let's drop the subject, and remember, this

is a private matter. But I know horrible things about Hyde, Utterson repeats.

"'It doesn't matter,' says Dr. Jekyll. I cannot change the will. I am in a very strange

and difficult position. I can't tell you about it, and I can't change that position.'

Henry, please trust me. I can get you out of that difficult position. We can write your

will again,' Utterson says and adds. Think about this.

My dear Utterson, thank you very much. I know you want to help me. But I don't need any

help. And I can send Hyde away any time, if I want. I am not in any trouble. Do not worry

about me. And forget about this matter, please. After hearing these words, Utterson realizes

something. Jekyll will not change his mind about the will, or about Hyde. So, he stands

up and is ready to leave. But Jekyll stops him. I have a big interest in Hyde. When I die

young man, you must protect him. Which I will never like him,' Utterson says. Don't forget

that, Henry. That's all right. You don't need to like him. Just promise to help him as

a lawyer when I am not here.

"'When you are not here, what do you mean?' Utterson asks. But Dr. Jekyll does not answer

this question. He only says, promise to help Hyde, for me. I promise,' says Utterson and

leaves. There are more questions on his mind now, and he is more worried about his friend,

Jekyll.

"'Why does Henry have so much interest in Hyde? I don't understand,' he says to himself."
