The first machine that allowed people to see moving images

was a device called the Zoo Praxiscope.

This primitive machine was also called Wheel of Life.

It was made in the U .S. in 1867 by William Lincoln.

Yet modern motion pictures did not begin until the invention of the movie camera.

The Frenchman, Luis Lumiere, is known as the inventor of the first motion picture camera in 1895.

But in fact, several others had made similar inventions

or had come up with similar ideas around those years.

Lumiere's invention, which was called cinematography, was a portable camera.

It also served as a film projector and processor.

Lumiere's invention began the motion picture era worldwide.

Luis Lumiere and his brother presented their first film

to their audience at the Grand Cafe in Paris on December 28, 1895.

This is known as the day when cinema was born.

On that day, the Lumiere brothers screened ten short films

which they had directed the year before.

The Lumiere brothers were not the first to exhibit motion pictures.

In fact, four years prior in 1891, the Edison company demonstrated their invention, the kinetoscope.

This device had a peephole at the top, which allowed only one person to view a film each time.

The kinetoscope was not a projector, but it introduced the idea of projection.

The film revealed motion pictures for the first time in New York City on April 14, 1894.

Ten kinetoscopes were used.

In later years, they developed projection systems, which were also called kinetoscopes.
