unit 6, bridging cultures, unit 6, see, reading, read and listen to the text and
do the following exercises. Body language. Verbal communication means
expressing ideas and sharing information. In verbal communication we use words to
talk with each other. However a large part of communication is non -verbal. We
often use our body to express our ideas and emotions. Hands can tell many things.
In different cultures there are different meanings of the hand gestures but some
hand movements have similar meanings. In many cultures the thumbs up gesture
shows that you are saying okay. When you say goodbye you wave your hand. When you
put your hands on your chin it means you are thinking. When you are telling the
truth you openly show your hands. However in some cultures people cross their
fingers behind their back when they are lying. Arms are also an active part of
body language. Crossing your arms means you are defensive or you don't agree.
Eyes are the most effective messages of our emotions. When we want to show our
love we look at people's eyes. Because our body movements can tell a lot about us
many people learn using their gestures effectively.
