Unit 8. Digital Era. Unit 8. See. Reading. Read and listen to the text and do the following

exercises. Nowadays, the internet addiction has become a serious problem, especially among

young people. The old generation isn't so interested in technology as much as teenagers

do today, because the new generation is the internet generation. Internet addiction means

that people use the internet a lot and cannot live without it. This is really dangerous for

health. A new survey suggests that the internet, which is used by billions of people, can be

a reason for mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and lack of attention.

Many people who are already addicted to the internet cannot do their daily routines, meet

their relatives and friends or concentrate on anything. The situation affects students

more. When students who must study for an exam try to concentrate on the exam materials,

they can be distracted by the internet easily. So, they cannot focus on the lesson and often

fail their exams and tests. Some students can prefer playing games rather than fulfilling

their responsibilities. This creates a time management problem in their whole life. They

cannot organize their daily tasks. Therefore, it becomes a serious problem for their future

career as well. This means, every day, thousands of people connect to the internet. Video game

websites look really entertaining at first, but most of them have aggressive and violent

components. This creates a troubled, isolated, and distracted society. All of us have a responsibility

to stop this. It must start at home. Teachers must educate students about the wrong users

of the internet and their possible bad effects. Also, parents must set limits for daily internet

use. The psychologists may help the children to overcome the problem. Parents may take

their children to get some help from them. If people who want to solve this problem apply

these solutions, they can create a trouble -free society with less or no mental health problems.
