Thanksgiving Day

American people celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday of November every year.

It is a festival and family holiday.

It lasts four days, and schools, colleges, many businesses and government workers are on holiday,

so nobody goes to school or work.

It is a special day because it means giving thanks to God.

Thanksgiving was normally a religious holiday in the past.

On December the 4th, 1619, a group of English settlers arrived at a place called Virginia in America.

They promised that that day was a day of thanksgiving to God.

People started to celebrate it in 1621.

Many non -Christians also have fun on this celebration.

The roads, airports and all the transportation means get crowded because people visit their families to be with them.

It is the busiest time of the year.

The most important part of Thanksgiving Day is having a traditional dinner with family.

It is special because people come together with family members.

They cook and eat roasted turkey, pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes and many other foods.

Pumpkin pie is their favorite dessert.

Before people start to eat their dinner, they pray and talk about what they are thankful for.

Most of them thank for their families, friends, good jobs and good things in their lives.
