In modern London, there are a lot of much taller buildings, such as the Gherkin at 180 metres, and the Shard at 306.

But how did people live then?

In Londonium, rich people built houses of stone or brick, but most of the population lived in small wooden houses on dark narrow streets close to the city walls.

These days, people live in modern blocks of flats in the city centre, or in larger houses in the suburbs.

There are wide pavements, and the streets are safe and well lit.

Social life was very different too.

For example, the Romans used to go to public baths to meet their friends, not just to keep clean.

That is why there were several of these near the city gates.

Nowadays, Londoners enjoy going to cafes, restaurants and pubs.

Roman London also had a stadium for big events. It held 8 ,000 people.

Today, London has dozens of theatres and concert halls where thousands of people see shows every night.

So, these are just a few of the differences between ancient and modern London.
