Helen Keller was an American writer and speaker.

She was born in 1880.

When she was 19 months old, she became ill and lost her eyesight in hearing.

In other words, she became blind and deaf.

She did not know shapes, colors, or words.

When Helen was 7 years old, a woman named Anne Sullivan came to teach her.

She formed letters on Helen's hand using sign language.

The first word Helen understood was water.

She learned this word when Anne put Helen's hand under some water and wrote W -A -T -E -R on

her hand.

Then, she learned words and sentences with this method.

When she was 10 years old, Helen went to a special school to learn how to talk.

She also learned to read by using braille, a special type of print for blind people.

Her favorite things to read were poetry and philosophy.

Helen even went to college.

She was the first deaf blind person to earn a college degree.

Helen wrote for newspapers and magazines about being blind and deaf.

In 1903, she also wrote a book about her life.

It was called The Story of My Life.

She always wanted to help other disabled people.

So she traveled around the world and taught people about being blind and deaf.

She showed others they could live happy lives even if they were disabled.

It took lots of hard work, but Helen made a big difference in the world.

Her life continues to inspire us today.
