Ruth Wakefield's Yummy Invention

If you love chocolate chip cookies, you should be thankful to Ruth Wakefield for her accidental invention.

In 1930, Ruth Wakefield and her husband owned an inn in Massachusetts, USA.

Ruth cooked the meals for the guests of the inn. Her desserts were very famous in the area.

One day, she was making chocolate cookies for the inn guests, but she didn't have any bitter baking chocolate.

She ran out of it days ago and forgot to buy some.

Ruth found a quick solution. She chopped up a Nestle chocolate bar into small chunks.

She mixed them into the cookie batter. She thought they would melt and spread into the dough when the cookies were in the hot oven.

But that did not happen.

When Ruth took the baking pan out of the oven, she was very disappointed.

The chocolate chunks didn't melt much. They kept their shape.

But Ruth served them to the guests. Surprisingly, the guests loved those cookies and asked Ruth for more.

So Ruth became the creator of the chocolate chip cookies.

She carried on using Nestle chocolate bar chunks in her cookies.

People often came to the inn just for Ruth's new cookies.

Then, newspapers printed Ruth's recipe of the chocolate chip cookies.

People began to buy Nestle chocolate bars to make them, and so Nestle's sales went up.

Finally, the Nestle company began to print Ruth's chocolate chip cookie recipe on the back of their chocolate bar packages.

And they gave Ruth free chocolate bars all the time.

In 1931, Nestle produced the world's first chocolate chips.

After that, the chocolate chip cookie became America's favorite.

Ruth wrote a cookbook in that year, too.
