Each colony has got one queen.

The queen lays eggs.

Baby ants come out of these eggs.

Other ants have got a lot of work to do.

Here are just a few of their jobs.

Most ants live under the ground.

Nests are ants home.

Worker ants dig the nests in the ground.

They use their strong jaws.

Worker ants are strong and they always work very hard.

Each nest has many rooms.

There are tunnels between the rooms.

Worker ants dig all these rooms.

Let's look at another type of ant, scout ant.

Scout ants find food outside and carry it to the nest.

They are also very strong.

They can carry very big pieces of food.

They share the food with the colony.

Different types of ants eat different kinds of food.

Many ants eat seeds and fruit.

Other ants eat insects like flies and bugs.

There are also soldier ants.

They stand at the nest's entrance and protect it from enemy insects.

They protect the entrance with their large heads.

Soldier ants often fight.

Sometimes they die in fights.
